By Michael Smith Editor Myca Nutt likes her team's chances this season. So does Sara Bane. "Our chances this year are really good," said Bane, one of five returning starters from to the Carolina Forest varsity girls' volleyball team. "We have the endurance to play at our best. I'm really excited because we've really improved." The Lady Panthers sure improved last season, going from a team that won only one match in all of 2006 and 2007 to a playoff contender. In 2008, Carolina Forest improved to 16-4 overall, 8-2 Region VI-AAAA, placing second only to Sumter. Now the Lady Panthers have their sights set on Sumter, which lost nine starters. Hopes are high that Carolina Forest can push deeper into the postseason. "It's been a big turnaround for us," said Nutt, who plays libero. "We've just worked a lot harder and communicate well with each other." Judging by Carolina Forest's performance in a scrimmage Saturday, their progression as a team was quite evident. In the unofficial match, Carolina Forest disposed of conference opponent West Florence 25-9, 25-8 and 15-12, with both teams stopping at 15 points in the third game. Bane led with 9 points in Game 1, which included 8 straight points from serve. Remanda Fenner scored 11 points in Game 2 and Mallory Hancock scored 9 points in the final contest. "Sumter had a lot of seniors last year," said CFHS coach Brittany Drew. "I think this year we'll compete well with them for the region title." Carolina Forest's next contest on the court comes Aug. 29, when the Lady Panthers host 11 other teams in a 12-team pre-season invitational at CFHS. The all-day invitational begins at 8:30 a.m. Read more in the Aug. 20 edition of the Carolina Forest Chronicle.
